1. Gauge
Gauge describes the thickness of the wearable portion. Many rook piercings are performed at 16 gauge, while some are placed at another size. The correct gauge is the size of your established channel—not whichever option looks thinnest online.
Never force a thicker piece through resistance. Jewelry that is much thinner than the established channel may also move excessively or alter how pressure is distributed.
2. Curved-barbell wearable length
The wearable length of a curved barbell is measured between the two end attachments, excluding the balls or decorative ends. Retailers commonly offer short curved barbells around the 6–8 mm range, but that range is not a personal recommendation. Fold thickness, piercing angle, swelling and end size all change the required fit.
3. Ring internal diameter
For a hoop or clicker, the key dimension is the open space inside the ring. A ring must clear the cartilage without squeezing it. Excessive diameter can create more rotation and snagging, while insufficient diameter can pull against the channel.
4. Decorative-end size
Large ends can overlap the ridge or press against the surrounding ear even when the bar itself is the correct length. Check both the width of the end and the space available above and below the piercing.

Why initial jewelry may look longer
Fresh piercings need room for early swelling, so an initial curved barbell may be longer than the final healed fit. After swelling has subsided, a piercer may recommend a downsize. Leaving an unnecessarily long bar in place can allow extra movement and catching, but changing too early can disturb the channel.

Do not remove a healing rook simply to measure the jewelry. The channel can be difficult to access and may begin to tighten.

- One or both ends are pressing into the cartilage.
- The jewelry leaves a persistent indentation.
- The bar projects far enough to catch hair or clothing repeatedly.
- A ring pulls the rook fold or cannot move without pressure.
- The piercing angle appears to change as jewelry moves.
- Tenderness, swelling or crusting increases after a jewelry change.
Stop changing jewelry and have the area assessed if the fit creates pressure or worsening irritation. Seek medical care for spreading redness, increasing heat or pain, fever, red streaks, or thick yellow or green discharge.
When can rook jewelry be changed?
